Samsung Galaxy 5 Wins Blind Camera Test

Samsung’s flagship phone has trounced its rivals in a blind camera test to prove how seriously the phone maker takes taking snaps.

Photos taken using the Samsung Galaxy S5, iPhone 5S, HTC One M8, LG G2, Sony Xperia Z2 and other top of the range smart phones were shown to participants who did not know which image was taken with which phone.

They were then asked to pick the photos they liked and of the 2,477 participants, over 700 (30.4%) chose images shot using the S5. Coming in at second by over 300 votes was the HTC One M8.

The Sony Xperia Z2 came in a close third with only four votes less than the M8 and the iPhone 5S and the LG G2 rounded off the top five.

The results of this comparison test are a little startling given that a similar test carried out in March showed the Nokia Lumia 1520 as the smartphone with the best camera. The LG G2 took second spot and the HTC One M8 was a distant sixth.

iPhone’s 5S flagship phone came a place above its HTC rival. Given that the HTC jumped to second spot while the Phone climbed to fourth, two places behind it, one is tempted to question the reliability of this mode of testing especially since the phone’s cameras haven’t been tweaked. Quite how the LG G2 fell off its 2nd place perch to come in fifth in the later test is also curious.

One is also tempted to question the relevance of such numbers as the megapixels in the taking of pictures.

According to the official specs, the Galaxy S5 has 16 MP which should mean theoretically that it should produce inferior images to the 20 MP Sony Xperia Z2. But clearly this is not the case.

The skill of the photographers is obviously another important consideration; were all the images used in the test taken by the same photographer? So even if you were to buy a smartphone based on the performance of its camera, I don’t know if the blind camera test is a reliable enough metric to use for decision making.

Buy the Galaxy S5 because of its overall performance; its 2.5GHz Quad-core processor and the 2GB of RAM it comes with. Or take it because of its brilliant 5.1-inch 1080p screen, or because it is water resistant.
